Evaluation

EVALUATION

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media production is a thriller, as so it therefore has to follow the conventions of a real thriller, such as what would be involved with the storyline and our intentions. Likewise, we have the central figure of the narrative and the person or figure causing the problem, from there you see the relationship between both the central figure and the figure causing the problem and how both are spellbound in the storyline. Additionally, thrillers also show unexpected events happening in everyday situations people face, in which they then relate to our product baring in mind that it is a thriller. This therefore shows our understanding of the bases of the genre (thriller), and have it formally applied to our produce. What is more is that , our product would/could challenge some of the conventions of media products. Thrillers are often shot in dark, gloomy places however on the contrary our thriller has not been shot in a dark place but a bright light set. The central figure and the problem cause do have some sort of relationship which we have incorporated with other thriller conventions such as, suspense, pace and cliff hangers. Within a thriller genre there are different conventions within it such as they follow a specific devices to create an effect on the audience. Often thrillers are focused around crime, in our thriller we focused on crime as well targeting the social issues teenagers face nowadays. In thrillers the protagonist usually has an exploitable weakness and you know who they are from the beginning and then the antagonist usually takes advantage of it. In thrillers both the protagonist and the antagonist are going against time.

Here I used a screen grab from another thriller that best compliments our thriller. I used a screen grab from the thriller film when a stranger calls where the antagonist answers the phone and therefore then engages in a conversation with the protagonist, similarly to ours we had Sara as the antagonist who receives a phone call from the protagonist. Films that have influenced me are Vertigo, When a stranger calls, Phone booth, and many more other similar thrillers have had an influence in the way we produced our thriller, encouraging us to think outside the box and explore with different angles and transitions. There are a few films that are similar to our film such as: Shifty, Don: The chase begins again, Bride of Chucky, The Conversation and many more.

2. How does your media product represent particular media groups?

Our media product represents a commonly targeted social group: teenagers to young adults. We follow the social norms and values and what influences many of the young adults within society, and as to how and why many of them end up where they are at the present e.g. drug dealing, imprisonment, gang violence etc. our media product represents the social influences teenagers and young adults face in society and the pressures they are drawn into. On the other hand we did not however represent other social groups in our media product because our main target group and focus was teenagers and young adults. Other social groups may not view the product in the same way as teenagers would because they would be critically analysing each and every bit of the product unlike teenagers and young adults who would just watch it. Our thriller explores the different concepts within society such as gender where by you usually find that it is the men who tend to be the one's selling drugs etc and not women because it is a more masculine thing to do in which we use a female figure to show the controversial role altercation. In our thriller we ensured that we had different ethnic groups/minorities and diversity within the different religions e.g. our antagonist was a female Muslim, the police officer was Irish and the driver was Turkish, so therefore in out thriller we explored the different religions and ethnic minorities. The characters in our thriller film were between the ages of 17/18 and the driver between the ages of 22-25, they are all within the working class selling goods to make a living. Young people are shown in both a positive way and a negative way as they face different obstacles in life and have to pave ways to make a living whether or not it is illegal or legal. They may be stereotypes within our thriller as teenagers are stereotyped as being mischievous and up to no good in which you see in our thriller.

3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

From our recent research into film distributors in media we found that Film4, BBC would be the most likeliest institutions that may distribute our product, because Film4 seeks to broadcast a mixture of films which are independent or created through self-governing, old, new, British films as well as other varieties of films. Our product is made by, media students, and is therefore an amateur film creatively produced. In addition, it could be used and shown in other media classes/students, who could use it as an example or somewhat guidelines to creating their own,and can compare their own product to other students amateur products. Furthermore, institution such as a school can distribute our media product. Other institutions such as YouTube or Internet TV related institutions might distribute our product. Other media institutions that may distribute our media product would be BBC 4 because it sponsors and promotes amateur films self-created.

4.Who would be the audience for your media product?

The type of media institution which might distribute our media product would depend on the financial support we would be able to get in order to distribute our product. Taking into consideration where the money would be coming from, where its going and the implications it may have. Through our research and experiences our product would be rated for a certificate of 15 so therefore our audience would basically be persons of the age of 15 and above because of the content of the product. Teenagers and young adults best suit the age certification because it was filmed in everyday locations for teenagers as well as representing them in the product. The type of market or institution our thriller would be most suitable for would be:

Adv & Dis Adv for Mass Media Marketing

  • Television: Reaches more people than any other medium; but costs the most.

  • Radio: Not as expensive as television, can reach the people with high satellite frequency and those able to get the message

  • Newspaper: Not expensive to buy and many people read newspapers daily, increasing the possibility of the ad getting read as well if eye-catching

  • Magazines: High quality graphics and information

  • Outdoor Billboards and Transit: Good image or reminder medium; can't communicate many details.

  • Internet: Good support medium; shares a lot of information worldwide so many people are in reach of the web, except those without the Internet, cheaper and easily accessible.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

The way in which we attracted/addressed our audience for our media product was by producing a questionnaire (focus group). We then asked them questions, together with their age and well as gender. Additionally we asked them what types and kind of thrillers they like, and why e.g. what draws their attention or attracts them to watch it, and what they look for in a thriller. Our results came back informing us that teenagers between that age of 15+, enjoyed “Crime, Horror, Action”. We have applied this to our storyboard, which includes the crime and the action aspect. Moreover, there is suspense created in the storyline, which then allows our audience to be able to work out the plot. In our product we used transitions etc, which will attract our audience. By shooting our product in this manor it enables our audience to take a closer look at the things which influence teenagers and young adults within society.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In the process of constructing our product we learnt a variety of techniques within technologies e.g. how to use the camera (positioning and holding), how to use iMovie software. When we first did our preliminary task it was the first time using a camera and had a few difficulties regarding positioning of objects or figures within the frame. By doing this task/exercise we learnt how to use camera in different angles and the different camera movements. We also learnt about continuity, the 180 degree rule and match one action. Moreover when it came to the editing stage we did not know how to do any other techniques apart from the simply straight cuts. Nonetheless, later when working with iMovie, I developed my skills of using iMovie further by learning how to insert different transitions such as cross-dissolves and overlap and fade ins. From then I began to think of the different ways in which we could incoporate in our product to make it polished. The iMac enabled us to upload pictures through blue tooth and many more. I found it productive using the iMac because I had used it before and therefore knew how to use some of its software's.When we were editing my other group members found it difficult to understand and to use as they had never used an iMac computer/software before and I was the only one in the group that had had experience in using it. Working with iMac requires constant saving unlike other software's were by they automatically save the work, so if you do not save the work then you are most likely to lose it and would therefore require you to do it again taking more time. The way in which our thriller held the audiences attention was through us as the producers producing a product in which by using music and clips and editing well to create a flowing product of events that will grab the audiences attention right from the beginning. People from thw ages of 15 above would be the most likeliest people to possibly watch our film because our target group is from the age of 15 onwards. The audience could carry on watching after the initial 2 minute opening because from our research on facebook after asking people what they thought of our film they wanted to know what would happen next which meant that they would want to carry on watching it after the initial 2 minute opening and find out what happens next because of the gripping opening overture.

iMovie is a movie editing application that is part of the
iLife suite of digital lifestyle applications that allows Apple Macintosh users to create movies from a number of different sources including digital video cameras, DV-encoded files, and pictures.

iMovie allows you to:

Easily import footage from digital camcorders and still cameras (that support video capture)

  • Organize your video in a central repository, across your Mac or on external hard drives

  • Gather, view, edit, and share your edited movie files

  • Create movie files that include music, sound effects, themes, menus, titles, transitions, and other effects

  • Save your edited movies onto physical media such as a DVD, CD or as a file on a hard drive

  • Share your movies on the Internet through services such as MobileMe Gallery, YouTube, and personal web sites

We used iMovie to edit our product by using this softeware it enabled us to work with better software applications and better our product.

Youtube is an online public communication site where you can upload music and videos where everyone can view. It allows registered users to upload their own videos and have available to others to view and comment upon. We used youtube to upload our preliminary task and our thriller film to recieve feedback from other people. Youtube was used because of quicktime upload it allowed us to upload our videos onto youtube quicker which meant that no time was wasted overall.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?

Looking back at our preliminary task, I feel that I have learnt an a great deal about media and its different conventions also about teamwork, editing, filming, production. When we first started, with the preliminary,we used it as an opportunity to understand the ways in which the camera works and how to edit. In the preliminary task, we did not have that many camera angles, positioning and movement. In the progression to our product, we have developed our understanding of how to use the camera incoporating what we learnt e.g. camera handling, positioning, movement etc. We had different camera movements, even though we did not end up putting them in our product. When we were editing our preliminary straight cuts and dissolves. Other than the transitions we used they are others which we did not use because we were uncertain whether or not they would be suitable. From experience we learnt that things will not go according to plan if you do not have plan to follow, which a can then have consequences. Moreover, I have also learnt that teamwork and cooperation within the team is highly essential. As a group I think that we worked well together as each of us had different ideas and together we merged them and had a positive outcome. The acting was left to those who we able to do it unlike me. As a group we found that working under pressure increases our pace in working. From when we did our pre-liminary task up till the point of which we then filmed and edited our final thriller product we have learnt a great deal and developed our understanding of the way in which different types of media is used and furthered our skills and editing and many more. The thriller shows further progressions and development of our skills because in the preliminary task you can see that we didn't have alot of knowledge as to how to use iMovie and the Mac software itself as it is an updated version of most softwares, and during our preliminary task found it a bit difficult to do but as we had further experience of how to use the software we become fully aware of the ways in which to use the software.

Locations

Here are some rough ideas of places we may consider to use in our final filming.

Use Of Camera

CAMERA FRAMING

The focus of how far the camera is from the subject and what angle shot is taken

CAMERA MOVEMENT
  • A panning shot where the camera moves slowly from side to side on a fixed axis

  • A tilt shot, where the camera moves up and down froma fixed axis
  • A crane shot where the camera, mounted on a crane, moves around at a distance above ground level
  • A tracking shot where the camera follows the action, moving along tracks laid for that purpose, often pulling backwards from a scene
  • A rolling shot where the camera moves diagonally, making the image askew (often used to suggest that a character is ill or drugged)

Construction of Production - Cost of production

The production process will not cost any money as the equipment is provided by school to film and edit.

Filming equipment

  • Camera- (Free) Provided by Robert Clack
  • Tripod - (Free) Provided by Robert Clack
  • Microphone -(Free) Provided by Robert Clack
  • Digital Camera - (Free) Provided by Robert Clack

Editing Equipment

  • Imac - (Free) Provided by Robert Clack

LocationHouse -

We filmed at Paul's house so it was free.

Alleyway - We filmed in a public place so it was free.

Road - We filmed in a public place so it was free.

Car - Paul's brother let us film in his car so it was free.

Costume and Makeup

We did not spend money on costume or makeup, as saima did her own makeup and wore her own clothes. Paul did not spend any money on costume as he wore his brother's police vest and his own clothes.

Music

We got our music for free, from MobyGratis and freeplay music. If we composed our own music it would have taken a long time to complete, also noone in the group is very good at playing instruments. We did not choose a copyright song as it would have been very expensive to use. If we did not consult the copyrighters they could have possible sued us as a group and the school. We did not want any trouble, so we used downloaded free music, it is easy and cost effective.

Props

All of our props belonged to us, we did not have to buy any props.Overall we did not spend any money on the film.

Construction Of The Production Music (MobyGratis and Freeplay music)

At the beginning of the course we had seen the previous years thriller trailers and blogs and from there we got the most popular music sites they used in their own thrillers the sites we looked at were... www.freeplaymusic.com and www.mobygratis.com these were the two main sites we looked at. For the mobygratis site we had saima apply to be a member of mobygratis in order for us to be able to use some of their unsigned music, her application was successful but however we had requested a few tracks that we wanted to be included in our final thriller trailer but we waited for few weeks without their correspondence, so we therefore took into our own hands and decieded to give the other site a go. We then found the genre, tempo, style of music we had initially wanted without having to register or wait for weeks on end for a correspondence from them. We found using www.freeplaymusic.com to be quicker and more efficent than the other and didn't waste anytime as it had all the music we could use and more.

Construction Of Production - Changes we made form the storyboard/inital idea

We made few adjustments from the storyboard/initial idea, we wanted our film to last the full 2 minutes. Adding these adjustments will make sure our film lasts 2 minutes.

Extra Parts Added

You can see the girl (Sara) running in the back garden and climbing over the fence. When the girl (Sara) gets in the car, the car will drive off, you will hear gunshots and then followed by seeing her getting dragged out of the car and left in the alleyway.

Besides that, every part of the storyboard is the same, we just added extra scenes. We wanted to add these scenes, as it will engage the audience more. It will raise suspense and make them wander why she is running. It will keep them on the 'edge of their seats,' when they find out she has been killed, and will have them watching into the end - if it was a long featured film.

As a group we decided that we are going to add a few dissolves and fade in, as we believe these transitions will make the film flow smoothly. We want different suspenseful music used throughout as it will excite the audience, and we are going to include non-diegetic sounds. We have also decided to use medium shots, point of view shots, over the shoulder shots and panning shots.

TARGET AUDIENCE

For our thriller we discussed as to what age group our film would most suit or most likely to be viewed by. From there we did some research looking at other films that have been created and people from our chosen target group have watched and what they liked about that certain film we asked them questions such as:

1. From your personal experience which age groups do you find watching action movies or thriller films?

2. What genre film do you like and why?

3. Would you consider watching a thriller film if its initial preview intrested you?

4. What do you think about thrillers? why?

5. Do you think social groups of the age of 15-20 are the most likeliest social groups to watch action and films full of suspense and cliff-hangers, redherrings etc?

6. If you were to create your own thriller what would you put in it?

7. What do you expect a thriller to include from the beginning to attract its targeted audience?

From the research we did we then decided that our initial target audience would be 15+ and so we therefore went to do further research and asked the people from that particular age group questions such as......
1.what do they expect to see in a thriller film?
2. do they know the difference between a thriller and a horror?
3. what makes a thriller different to a horror? why?
4. what thriller films have yo u watched resently? what made you want to watch it?
and many other questions but however from our research it made clear that people from the ages of 15 onwards watched thriller films and enjoyed them more as it kept them suggesing what would happen next unlike some of the films whereby you watch a scene then you can predict what happens next whereby a thriller keeps an audience guessing and in the end test their theory as to whether they were right or wrong.

HEALTH & SAFETY

HEALTH & SAFETY

When looking at Health and Safety you have to take into consideration things such as;

  • how the risk assessment would be carried out

  • what hazadorous things could be of obstraction and harmful

  • how to control the risk

In every work environment you are required to apply health and safety at work rules and regulations :

  • inspect the premises and make sure it is safe to work in

  • check equipment and materials

  • risk assessment carried out in all premises used to avoid causing harm to others

  • always maintain spacial awareness and surrounding

  • who could be affected

  • consider the most vulnerable (disabled, frail etc)

  • note areas where there are sharp corners and edges that may be of harm

  • poor lighting can cause strain on your eye sight

Health and safety are essential for the film industry to run. It ensures that there are no hazards, which can harm people in the industry. There are many rules and regulations they have to abide by.In my film, my industry is made up of four people Paul Willis, Saima Jannath, Dionne Zara and I. According to the Health and Safety Work Act (1974), the location manager, Production Manager or First Assistant Director, has to carry out Health and Safety risk assesment. In my Industry each safety rule would have details of the person responsible for the rule, and will have instructions on how the rule should be followed. We discussed what rules we should establish, to ensure we are safe during shooting and editing of the film. We decided to make notes of what to do if we are in a dangerous situation e.g. The film shooting was mainly at Paul's house, if there was a fire we would organise ourselves in a straight line, and escape thorough the nearest exit - back/front door, then call the fire brigade. We made a list on the rules we should follow.(We did follow all these rules except the 2nd and fifth rule) - we did not shoot at night and we did not use any weapons.

Appropriate Technical Competencies

Holding a shot steady

The camera was placed on top of the tripod during the filming, except when there were point of view shots. It is important to have steady shots, as it will be easier for the audience to follow the actors. The steadiness of the camera will make the film look professional.

Framing a shot

When the girl was getting changed, we placed the camera a few feet away from her, we made sure you could see both foreground and background surroundings, as it tells the audience more about the character. There was back lighting, to build tension slowly up to the point of her running through the back garden. When she was running a medium shot was used, she was positioned in the middle, so you can see the exact location. The point of view shot, tells the audience she is on the run from the police. This will make the audience question themselves, why is she on the run? What crime has she committed?

We wanted to film in broad daylight as the light symbolizes hope and innocence. Which is ironic as the girl is not innocent. Sara has hope to escape the police, what she wanted killed her. Her drug dealer occupation was aimed in making money, unfortunately her obsession for money lead to her own destruction.

Using a variety of shot distances

We used various shots from mid-shot to point of view shot in various shot distances. In the beginning the camera was near her. When the police officer was walking towards the house the camera was quite far -it was a long shot. The camera was obviously very close when we shot all point of view shots, we had a held in my hand through the strap shot so that you can see her running as if you are apart of it. When the car was driving off, the camera was on the side of the car. It was a few feet away from it, as it drove off the camera grew more distant and distant from it. When she was dragged onto the floor the camera did a close up to her face by zooming in.

Shooting appropriate material (for a thriller)

From the audience research, (the focus group and the results from the questionnaire), we found out that males like car chases. Unfortunately we could not have any car chases with the police and the drug dealers customer, as we would have had to consult the council and they could take a long period to respond. It is unlikely they would give a 16 year old director permission to film car chases in local areas. We would also have to consult the Minister of Transport, to make sure roads are clear when we are filming, and this would cost money.

Instead a normal car scene conversation, we thought it gave the same effect as a car chase, because the last thing you expect is a customer to turn round and kill you. When she was running it added builds up suspense and tension, which will make the audience feel the emotion of thrill, they will feel anticipated to see if she will succeed in her escape from the police before he barges in. I have gained an understanding as to what a thriller movie is, and what aspects are needed to make a thriller film. We have shot appropriate material for a thriller, we did not film a murderer going on a killing spree as that plot is highly associated with horror films.

Editing

The editing was a long process, especially when your on a tight deadline. As a group we used many dissolves, overlaps and wash outs. The wash outs were only used when there was a point of view shot, of (sara) running through the garden, this was effective as it quickly moved from the perspective of the drug customer to the drug dealer. When you saw her on the floor dead, it washed out to a close up of her face. Also used dissolves and overlaps because they were the only transitions that made all the scenes flow together.

Use of Varied Captions Effect

The only captions we used were the candidate details and titles. Just before the movie starts, we had a faded black background with grey captions which said Jannath Production Presents. These captions were reflected at the bottom, this made the film look professional, the other grey captions, of job titles were moved from right to left. At the end of the film, two large words came across the scene, expanding which showed the title of our film 'Dead End.' Not many people used this titles background effect, this made our film more interesting to watch, also it has taught the audience, the important people behind the film.

Mis-en-scene

Mis-en-scene was a very important aspect of our film. It tells the audience everything about the characters, and gives clues on what will happen in the film later on. In the beginning you could easily see the surroundings - the props- you could see magazines perfume, the mirror she was looking into. You could easily see she was in a bedroom.

She straightened her hair and then followed by her makeup. It was raining before so her hair went a bit wavy.

When she was searching for the bag of drugs, her eyes were open, and eyebrows were arched and forehead folds were creased together. This facial expression showed that she was worried- worried because find could not find my drugs, which the client wanted. While she was looking for the drugs her back was hunched, and arms were loose because it made it easier to grab the drugs. All the objects were positioned at the bottom while she was positioned above it. The policeman's back was straight, his arms were by his side. This body language showed he has power.

The scenes in the house are lit in back lighting, this lighting was used because it creates a tense atmosphere. No lighting was used for the outside scenes. We used the natural resources - sun. We wanted the film to be in colour as it would have looked odd having scenes in different colours. One of the group members had suggested that we use a black and white effect on some scenes of the film, but after discussing it and pointing out that black and white images are used to tell the past/flashbacks.

You could easily see she was in a alleyway there were broken fences and tins of rubbish. When there was a point of view shot of the drug dealer and drug customer, we were positioned at then end of the camera, so the audience could see the tins of rubbish. We were near each other to show we had a close deadly relationship. When the car was speeding off, the camera was in the centre, then when the car stopped the camera was on the side of the car.

Sound

Non-Diegetic Sounds

We made sure the music was low, when my phone was ringing and when she was talking. The volume of the music increased until you could see the police knocking on the door. We wanted the audience to hear the knock as well as Sara. To emphasise the fear of the criminal, (thus she quickly searching for her drugs). She was afraid that she would get caught. You can hear the car gearing this will make it more interesting for the audience to watch.

Diegetic Sounds

The only diegetic sounds we used was the gunshots, this continues onto the next scene (sound bridge)you could hear the booming of the two gunshots, the music was low so the gunshots could be heard. This immediately engage them further, as they cannot see the person getting shot, this will make them wonder who got shot? In the end you the realise that Sara is pulled out of the car and left for dead in the alleyway.

Construction Of The Production (Filming + Editing)

1st Filming day - Friday 19th March (11:00-12:30)

As a group we started the filming on Friday, during our media lesson. We filmed the scene, where the police officer knocks on the door. Also the chase between Sara and the police, however could not film on that day, as it was raining. We as a group decided not to shoot in the rain because the other scenes would have been shot during a sunny day. The film will look unusual if the weather is different in certain scenes. Instead we filmed Sara (Saima getting changed). She brushed her hair and put on her bangles, the phone rang shepicked it up, she then ran to the window, then started to look for the package wanted. Then we filmed her running down the stairs. As a group am quite happy, we did quite a bit of filming. We then went back to school and loaded the footage. We hoped for the next days weather to sunny, we are going to shoot the chase between the police officer and Sara.

2nd Filming day - Monday 22nd March (13:00-15:00)

It was sunny today! So the group went to Paul's house and filmed him knocking on the door - he was the police officer. We also filmed her running into the garden, and climbing over the fence into an alleyway. We filmed the car scene today, the car pulled up and she got in, then the car drives down the road, finally you see her being pulled out of the car dead.We filmed the car scene today, the car pulled up and she got in, then the car drives down the road, finally you see me being pulled out of the car dead. Finally we have finished filming. Now all we have to do is the editing.

1st Editing - Wednesday 24th March (13:00-15:00)

On this day I wasn't in due too illness, so on this day saima was the one left to editing. She did the titles at the beginning, and imported the scenes and placed them in order, then from the imported clips, she then deleted the parts that we did not need. It was saima first time editing clips, with my knowledge of technology i more experienced with the Imac computers, but since i was absent it was left to another member of the group, as a group we did not want to waste any valuable time as the deadline is creeping up. Editing may seem easy but it is not as it requires full attention and concentration. It takes time to cut and put the scenes together in order for them to flow from one to the other.

2nd Editing day of our film - Friday 26th March (10:30-1:30)

On my return I looked at what my colleagues had done and what could be improved and changed. I then put in transitions, starting from the title where a fade in was added, many dissolves and overlaps too were added. When the car is speeding down, Paul suggested from that point onwards, it should be in black and white, as it is the most significant part of the scene. However when we discussed it a s a group we found that it was not apporpriate, becuase black and white images in film or media are used in flashbacks or anything to do with the past.We added music aswell from http://www.freeplaymusic.com/, we included our non-diegetic sounds as well (police knocking on the door and the car speading up). We wanted to have a variety of non-diegetic sounds and diegetic sounds, as it will make it will engage the audience. While the car is speeding down a gunshot sound was added, then from that point everything was colour and not black and white. We have finally finshed our film.

Brainstorm of Names

We came up with a few titles for our final film such as:

and many more but as a group then decided to go with 'Dead End'

During this period in time we were trying to decide on which title would best suit our final thriller production, as a group we came up with different titles of which could be possible contenders as titles as shown above and from then we did a survey whereby we asked a few people which title they felt would be the most suitable one for us to use. The survey then gave us an idea of which title people prefered to others and from there we then decided on our final title name which we then went on to use for our thriller thereafter we went back to those people we had asked which title they prefered and then they watched the initial 2minute trailer and they thought it went well and suited the action involved in the thriller itself.

Animatic Storyboard

Preliminary exercise

We were set a preliminary task to complete and in the end this was our final product. The task was given in order to help us begin to use the cameras and how to use them and how no to use them, this enabled us to get to grips with the process of handling a camera and its different angles. During this task we did face a few difficulties such as how to edit the film once finished as we were not yet knowledgeable when it came to using iMovie. It was a compulsory task in which everyone in the class had to complete in order to familiarise ourselves with the equipment used in process of filming. After being given a tutorial of how to use iMovie we began our editing which then made it a lot simpler for us to use. During the process of editing we did however face a few problems e.g. trying to create a preliminary task which had a continuous flow from start to end incorporating the skills we already had from using software and computer technology excluding iMovie.

Analysis Of Preliminary Excercise
In our preliminary task we used a variety of edits e.g. cuts and fades. From the beginning shot you have a shot whereby you can see both the foreground and the background inthe same mid shot which then gives you the sort of environment the character is in and its surroundings. At the point were Saima is at the table we have a mid shot & sort of deep focus shot of here doing her work on the computer followed by a straight cut from one angle shot to another, i.e. saima to sir walking into the room we had a staright cut. After that we have sir entering the room whereby we incoporated jump cuts to him sitting down on the table to talk to saima. At the point when Mr Williamson and Saima engage in a conversation we had a deep focus shot which gives the audience a choice as to where they may want to focus either on Mr Williamson or on Saima which is good because they then have the option of choicing their central figure focus throughout. Followed by this we have another jump cut toa close up when saima is crying we did this because we wanted to show that we can capture facial expression and emotion of a character within a frame. Therefore after this we had the straight cut to sir comforting saima and then in to a fade out. We tried our best at trying to edit the preliminary footage as it was our first attempt on using unfamiliar software i.e. iMovie.

Focus Group

This focus group helped the group understand what an audience wants from a thriller. Their opinions on why not, or why they like thriller films. The males enjoyed a thriller with explosions, fast pace music and car chases. The girls rarely watch thriller films. They were more interested in social realism. There were no microphones available, as students were using them, therefore there is a buzzing sound in the background, but you can clearly hear their responses to the questions. From this focus group we learnt that thriller films are more popular to males than females. The SFX attracts males to the genre. They especially like conspiracy films - The Manchurian candidate. The girls also like conspiracy films, Aicha really likes Alfred Hitchcock films. Also learnt that some people may find the thriller genre confusing, Jaye was not sure if the last film she watched was a thriller. This has showed that we need to include most thriller conventions, so it is obvious to the audience that my film is a thriller film.

Phone Booth

This is an action thriller, where by a man is tempted to answer a public telephone ringing from a distance. By answering the phone he then realises he cannot leave the booth as if he does someone will die, therefore creating the suspense and drawing the audiences attention.

Bourne Identity

Bourne Identity is another example of a thriller. It is about a man who doesnt know who he is after an accident which then wipped out his memory and can only remember things he just learnt apart from having the qualities of a professional assassin. He was found by fisherman floating in the Mediterranean with two gunshots on his back. He suffers from amnesia and within two weeks he is fluent in many languages annd develops skills. The character of the psychogenic man is played by Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, An amnesiac desparately trying to find clues into his recent past to remember who he is and why someone is trying to kill him..

The Psychological Thriller "The Mind, Conflict and the Past"

The suspense created by 'psychological thrillers' often comes from two ro more characters preying upon one anothers minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other.

Narrative- Structure, Formulas and Devices

  • Clear establishment of cause and effect plotting which establishes character motivations and helps tell an interesting story which proceeds logically and steadily.
  • Automatic use of continuity editing
  • Enigmas- refers to a puzzle, something mysterious or unexplicable, or a riddle or difficult problem.

In thrillers this commonly something which the protagonist hast to try to find out or solve before the narrative is resolved and the film finishes.

Red Herrings

  • A red herring is the name given toa device which tend to divert the audience from the truth or an item of significance.
  • Can work with other devices (enigmas) to create suspense

John Frankenheimer

John Frankenheimer

Frankenheimer was born in Malba, Queens, New York. Frankenheimer was raised in the Catholic faith and received his education at LaSalle Military Academy, a Catholic military school. After graduating from LaSalle in 1947, Frankenheimer entered Williams College. By this time, he had developed an interest in acting and studied drama. Frankenheimer earned his B.A. degree from Williams in 1951. John Frankenheimer's films have always reflected his views on important social and philosophical topics. Birdman of Alcatraz and The Fixer explore the indomitability of the human spirit. Seven Days In May details the anatomy of a military coup. The Manchurian Candidate is an indictment of the McCarthy era. The Train questions whether a work of art is more important than human life.

Between 1951-53 he served in the U.S. Air forces, It was during this time that Frankenheimer became interested in the production of film and television and lost his interest in acting. He became attached to the film squadron that was based in California where he learned about production. Frankenheimer loved working with cameras, often taking some home on the weekend to learn more about them. Deciding to become a filmmaker, Frankenheimer produced some documentary shorts.

The Manchurian Candidate 1962 & 2004

This film was created in by John Frankenheimer, starring Frank Sinatra. This is considered to be a political, conspiracy thriller during/ end of the cold war. It showed what was happening in the United States in that era as they were under the threat of communism and feared it would take over their country. Thrillers often take place in exotic settings such as foreign cities. The film tells the story of a soldier who begins to grow suspicious of what happened to his troop when they were attacked in Korea. As time passes the soldiers begin to have dreams about events that may have happened or may not have happened but have been brainwashed to think they had taken place in the battle in Korea.

This is the re-make of the Frank Sinatra version of The Manchurian Candidate 1962. 2004 Jonathan Demme had a re-make of the film which then starred Denzel Washington / Meryl Streep. When i watched this version i thought it gave out the feel of a conspiracy/psychological/political thriller. It showed an innocent hero being drwan into action. Powerful enemy with very large ambitions. It has a few cliffhangers, moments of suspense and tension e.g. when a probe is thought to be planted in the vice president, question that remains is will it be discovered and will it be discovered in time.

Godzilla

This film was directed by Ronald Emmerich in 1998. It is about a man eating creature that is loose around the city in Manhattan, where immediate action is taken and the entire city is evacuated with the military left to defend their city and destroy the "Godzilla".

Review:

When I watched the clip I was it kept me focused on the whole film it draw ma attention from the immediate start, it kept me wanting to know what else is going to happen whether or not there would be any survivers...

1) where did it come from?

2) what is it after?

3) will there be any survivers?

4) can it be destroyed?

Those were the questions on my mind the entire time i watched the film because it kept you in suspense, as there were a few cliffhangers in the film it drew my attention further. I personally thought it was an amazing film to watch.

Jaws

EXAMPLE OF CONTRAPUNTAL SOUND

At times when you watch a film you hear that the sound does not seem to match what we are watching. In which this is referred to as contrapuntal sound, this has been noted as to be the most famous example of this type of sound in "Jaws".

Shifty

A British urban thriller set in the outskirts of london, focuses on the different themes such as friendship and loyalty to each other whilst also looking at the everyday lifestyle of shifty a young drug dealer living in the outskirts of london trying to make a living but has to find a way out without being killed. The way in which this film was marketed was through using a microwave scheme whereby film-makers are challenged to shoot a full length film for up to £75,000 with the option of raising additional in-kind support taking the budget to a maximum of £100,000. The scheme includes intensive film-making, tightly focused scripts, short production schedules and commercial potential. This film was considered as to also appeal to middle-class Guardian reading audience, the trailer targeting this audience featured a more classical style soundtrack whilst the urban trailer featured a hip-hop style soundtrack that didnt actually feature in the film eventually as a result. The way in which this film was marketed represents an example of cross-media converegence whereby it used:

  • music- mp3 downlaods

  • cd- the soundtrack

  • youtube- music video

  • cinema and television trailers (also on youtube)

  • dvd/blu-ray

What is a Thriller

A thrillerthrillerthriller is a book or film which is designed to keep the reader or viewer on edge with suspenseful and sensational action. Thrillers have also been produced in the radio, theater, and television media. This genre is incredibly large, and thrillers often overlap with pieces of work produced in other genres; mysteries, for example, are often thrillers. Many people find thrillers very enjoyable, and they appreciate the fast pacing and complex plots associated with this genre.

Types of Thrillers:
The thriller genre can include the following sub-genres, which may include elements of other genres:

There are many more sub-genres which are used within the world of thrillers.

The Dark Knight

El laberinto del fauno

El secreto de sus ojos

District 9

Hotel Rwanda

North by North-west

Middle-aged Madison Avenue advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill is mistaken for a government agent by a gang of spies. New York advertising executive Roger Thornhill is kidnapped by a gang of spies led by Philip Vandamm, who believe Thornhill is CIA agent George Kaplan. Thornhill escapes, but must find Kaplan in order to clear himself of a murder it is believed he committed. Following Kaplan to Chicago as a fugitive from justice, Thornhill is helped by beautiful Eve Kendall. In Chicago, she delivers a message to Kaplan that almost costs Thornhill his life when he is chased across a cornfield by a crop-dusting plane.

North by Northwest is a 1959 American suspense film directed by
Alfred Hitchcock, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason, and featuring Leo G. Carroll and Martin Landau. The screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, who wanted to write "the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures".
North by Northwest is a tale of mistaken identity, with an innocent man pursued across the United States by agents of a mysterious organization who want to stop his interference in their plans to smuggle out
microfilm containing government secrets (a classic MacGuffin).

Review:

I watched North by North-west which was created by Alfred Hitchcock in the 1950s, the first time i watched it i thought it would be boring but as you continue to watch and unrevel the story as a viewer you are drawn in. As i continued to watch the film questions began to surface such as....

1) Who is George Kaplan?
2) What do they want with him?
3) If they knew who Kaplan was the they wouldn't mistaken him for someone else....
4) Will Mr Thornhill survive?

I found myself enjoying the film because it kept you in suspense as i wanted to know what would happen next and as to whether or not Mr Thornhill will survive, or would they eventually find out that the man they had initially kidnapped wasnt the man they had anticipated the kidnapping with. Hitchcock used a lot of camera movements and angles to emphasis the viewpoint and draw our attention. Thrillers often overlapwith mystery stories but are distinguished by the structure of their plots, this is seen as a conspiracy thriller, and has set scenes e.g. train station.

Cliff Hangers, Red Herrings and Enigmas

Cliff Hangers

According to the Britannica encyclopedia this word means 'adventure presented in installments, each ending in suspense'.It is commonly used to show a thrilling situation. Characters would have to face difficult problems, e.g. In North by North West, Eve and Thornhill are literally hanging of a cliff. The aim of a cliff hanger is to keep the audience engaging with the film, to see if the problem resolves itself or plummets to more danger and possibly the destruction of the hero/heroine.

Red Herrings

A red herring is a false trail, which is aimed to divert the audiences attention from the truth, e.g. In the Untouchables, Eliotness is given information on a warehouse that is storing Al Capone's alcohol, leading up to this scene there is slow suspenseful music, the treasure department surround the warehouse and break in. Inside the warehouse no traces of alcohol were found. It was a false lead.

Enigmas

Enigmas are puzzles, mysteries or problems, the protagonist must solve them in order to defeat the antagonist.

SOUND-BRIDGE

SOUND-BRIDGES

When the scene begins with the carry-over sound from the previous scene before the new sound begins. Sound bridge helps create a smooth trasnition from one scene to another as the film would seem very disjointed if the sound changed every time the picture on the screen would change. Sound is said to be enhancing th econtinuity of the film.

PARALLEL AND CONTRAPUNTAL SOUND
Parallel sound- e.g. if we are looking at children playing in the park we automatically expect to hear happy voices and light hearted music
Contrapuntal sound - when we are watching the happy scenes in the park but hear a sinister sounding 'dur dur' theme which signals the arrival of a shark as seen in the films jaws, this is why it is known as contrapuntal sound because the sound in which we hear does not fit in with the images we see appear on screen.

SOUND

SOUND

DIEGETIC AND NONDIEGETIC SOUND

This is the world of film as we see it on the cinema screen it is known as the diegetic world. We can only see a section of this world, the events which the filmaker has chosen to include in the frame. However in modern day cinema-going audience we accapet that there are things taking place around th edges of what wea see on screen.
Diegetic Sound
Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is understood to be present by the action of the film:
  • voices of characters
  • sounds made by objects in the story
  • music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( source music)
  • Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world
  • Diegetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.

This is sound which is part of the film world we are watching. This can be either dialogue, music or sound effects which come from a source within the world of film. The music would be from a source visible on the set screen.

Nondiegetic Sound

Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been understood to be present in the action:

  • narrator's commentary
  • sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
  • mood music
  • credits
  • captions etc

This is sound which we don not recognise as part of the film world such a voice-over or background music.
